Other Significant Teaching– Continuing Education

• Environmental Hazards in Residential Real Estate Transactions – designed and continue to teach a continuing education course for real estate agents and brokers that discussed how to address a number of environmental hazards (i.e., radon, electromagnetic fields, lead, underground storage tanks) in home purchase and sale transactions. Over the past 20 years, the course has been presented to approximately 2000 real estate professionals in approximately 20 states.
• Risk Assessment and Risk Management in Environmental Law – designed and taught a course, in conjunction with the American Law Institute – American Bar Association (ALI-ABA) to instruct attorneys and managers about how risk assessment and risk management are applied to environmental hazards, and how environmental law affects and influences risk assessment. This course was offered in 1998 in Washington, DC. Approximately 65 attorneys and environmentalmanagers attended the course.
• Radiation Risk Communication – designed and taught a course to instruct Nuclear Regulatory Commission staffers about communicating with members of the public to explain the risks and benefits of radiation, with an emphasis on how radiation sciences are used to construct evidencebased communication. This course is being offered at NRC headquarters and NRC regional offices.

Other Significant Teaching – Certificate Program

Faculty co-sponsor of the Humane Sciences and Toxicology Certificate Program, approved by the School of Public Health in February 2007. The educational objective of this certificate program is to provide students with an understanding of the principles that govern the relationship between biomedical researchers and laboratory animals and illustrate the role that transgenic, in-vitro, computational, non-mammalian or non-animal research plays in biomedical research. The program will introduce, and explain the application of, the “3Rs,” (reduction, replacement and refinement) which are the guiding principles of humane science as well as demonstrate how the use of humane science principles in biomedical research can lead to more robust scientific methodology and knowledge. The certificate program courses cover the scientific principles needed to appreciate humane science and identify and evaluate its implications in biomedical research and public health policy.
