The Use of Cultured Renal Medullary and Glomerular Cells as an Alternative to Evaluating Animals for Chemically Related Nephrotoxicity

Peter H. Bach, PhD
University of Surrey, Guildford, England

Peter Bach, PhD, of the University of Surrey, Guildford, England, received renewed funding for his work with kidney cells, which can be damaged by frequent use of pain relievers and other drugs. He cultured these cells from rats and used the cultures to study the toxic effects of drugs.

Further experiments should reveal whether Dr. Bach's technique will be an effective alternative to animal tests for drug toxicity.
