A. Jay Gandolfi, PhD, of the University of Arizona College of Medicine, Tucson, received a new grant to study isolated tissue from rabbit kidneys. He is learning how certain drugs and other chemicals interfere with the kidney's tubules, minute structures important in the maintenance of proper blood chemistry. The tubules are particularly sensitive to toxins.
Dr. Gandolfi has discovered that at least one toxic chemical does not affect the tubules directly but rather reduces their blood flow, depriving them of oxygen. This research may lead to in vitro tests of chemicals that affect kidney function.
