Development and Validation of an In Vitro Model for Acute Toxicity Screening Using Hepatocytes Freshly Isolated from Adult Mammals

Genevieve Krack, PhD
Catholic University of Louvain School of Pharmacy, Brussels, Belgium

Genevieve Krack, PhD, of the Catholic University of Louvain School of Pharmacy, Brussels, received a new grant to study the biochemical changes in rat liver cells exposed to toxins. She discovered toxins cause measurable changes in the cells' use of sugar, production of protein, and uptake of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins.

"These experiments would make suitable alternative tests because they reduce animal use, are economical, and are more precise than conventional test," Dr. Krack says.
