Synthesis and Secretion of Proteins by Isolated Mouse Hepatocytes as an Indicator of Cellular Injury

David J. Thomas, PhD
Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, Baltimore, Maryland

David J. Thomas, PhD, of the Hopkins School of Public Health, received a new grant to study proteins released by mouse liver cells after cellular injury. Measurements of these proteins may provide an in vitro test for liver toxicity. And Dr. Thomas may find that all cells release proteins after injury, laying the groundwork for alternative tests for other tissues.

Protein release may play a role in modulating the body's immunologic response to injury. If so, this study may have a great impact on other fields of biomedical research.
