In Vitro Methods for Evaluating Toxicity to Skin Contact Sensitivity

Arthur M. Dannenberg, MD, PhD
Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, Baltimore, Maryland

With previous CAAT funding, Dannenberg discovered unusual structures in some cells of chemically irritated, cultured skin of rabbits, guinea pigs and humans. He now proposes to look for a relationship between the dose of the irritant and the number of cells containing these structures. In other proposed experiments, Dannenberg will determine whether skin irritation can be measured in vitro by monitoring injured skin cells' release of an enzyme.
