In Vitro Human Cell Systems to Study Trace Metal Toxicity

Multa M. Webber, PhD
University of Colorado School of Medicine, Denver, Colorado

Webber will develop a variety of human cell cultures for use in toxicological research on cadmium, zinc and other metals found in small amounts in a variety of products, including cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. These metals are often toxic yet sometimes protect the body from toxicity. Human cell cultures that can measure metal toxicity would be prime candiates for development as alternatives to animal testing.
