In Vitro Screening of Drugs to Predict for Neurotoxicity

Stuart A. Grossman, MD and Mark R. Gilbert, MD
The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland

Grossman and Gilbert are developing an in vitro method of screening drugs for their toxic effects on nerve cells. The scientists will determine the specificity and sensitivity of nerve tissue culture by studying anti-cancer agents of known neurotoxicity in culture to establish a basis for this approach to neurotoxicity testing.
