Cultured Mouse Retina Neurons and Photoreceptors: A Bioassay for the Investigation of Neurotoxic Substances

Ruben Adler, MD
The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland

Adler is continuing his analysis of the cell-specific mechanism of excitatory amino acid neurotoxins in well-defined culture of chick embryo and mouse retinal neurons and photoreceptors. The dose-response characteristics of the toxins on specific cells will allow use of the cultures as a bioassay. Adler also is investigating the involvement of endogenous neurotransmitters made by the cultured cells.
