Evaluation of an In Vitro Blood Brain Barrier Model for Toxicity Testing

Teresa K. Rowles, PhD
University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennesee

Rowles will set up a model of the blood-brain barrier using cultures of rat cerebral microvascular endothelium, with and without associated astroglia cells. She will also try to set up co-cultures of the rat cells with human neuroblastoma cells, testing both cultures for viability, expression of typical enzymes, transport of typical molecules and transport of three known neurotoxins.
