From the time of Descartes a concept of what animals represent in the scheme of life has preoccupied thinkers. Some (e.g. Descartes) asserted that animals are mere "machines," incapable of thought or sensation, while others believed animals could think in some fashion and experience pain and pleasure. Today, what many have called the "moral status" of animals is as high as it has ever been. And recent findings in animal behavior have continued to buttress the idea that at least some types of animals are far more intelligent and sentient than was ever believed.
