Abstract for TestSmart -- Endocrine Disruptors

Perspectives on the Origin, the Issue, and the Future

Theo Colborn

This will be a historical perspective of how the concept of endocrine disruption emerged. I will revisit the roles that wildlife and human epidemiology played in the enlightenment stages, and how animal testing played a critical role in verifying the problem. It will present some conclusions and recommendations that prompted governments around the world, including the US, to call for the reduction of exposure to chemicals of this nature. It presents some issues that have surfaced over the past decade that this meeting needs to grapple with, and opens the door for seeking areas where all parties can agree.
