P&G, HSUS and NIH Fund Alternatives WebsiteFinding information about replacement, reduction and refinement in research, education and testing should soon be as simple as doing an Internet search on the word "alternative," thanks to a collaborative effort funded by the Procter & Gamble Company, The Humane Society of the United States, and the Office for Protection from Research Risks at the National Institutes of Health. The project team, which also includes the Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT), the Animal Welfare Information Center (AWIC) and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, will collaborate in producing a comprehensive resource on alternatives, which links together research, animal and alternative-related sites around the world. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration Office of Science and the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, site of an online alternatives database, are also involved in the project. Creation and maintenance of the site will be handled by CAAT. The Alternatives to Animal Testing web site will also provide information on search strategies to assist investigators and animal care and use committee members looking for alternatives during the protocol review process; on-line alternatives journals, newsletters and other publications; information on Three R funding sources; special lectures; seminars, and presentations on alternatives; alternatives discussion lists; and software and other computer resources for educators looking for alternatives in education. For further information on the new web site, or to suggest links or information which should appear on the site, please contact Joanne Zurlo, Ph.D., associate director of CAAT at 410-223-1615. |
