SCAW Presents Harry C. Rowsell Award to Temple Grandin

The Scientists Center for Animal Welfare presented the third Harry C. Rowsell Award to Temple Grandin, Ph.D., PAS at the national AALAS meeting in Baltimore on October 17th, 1995. Grandin, assistant professor in the Department of Animal Sciences at Colorado State University, is an internationally known researcher, lecturer and writer on agricultural handling. She has consulted with many companies and other segments of the livestock industry, advising on humane stunning methods in slaughter plants and handling procedures to reduce stress-related meat quality problems.

In Vitro Hematotoxicity, Drug Development and Regulatory Approval

An in-depth course on in vitro approaches to drug development and regulatory approval in hematotoxicology will be held in Bethesda MD on May 4-10, 1996. Topics to be covered at the meeting include the following: Development of in vitro hematotoxicology comparison of in vitro and in vivo hematopoiesis. In vitro systems used for hematotoxicity testing: pros and cons. Dealing with troublesome mechanisms of hematotoxicity in vitro. In vitro modeling and drug metabolism by bone marrow cell types. Potential applications of in vitro hematotoxicology: drug discovery and preclinical development. Bridging preclinical and clinical studies. Potential applications of in vitro hematotoxicology: Evaluation and approval of new molecular entities. Conference organizers are Martin J. Murphy and Ralph E. Parchment.
