Funding for AlternativesThe Doerenkamp-Zbinden PrizeThe Hildegard Doerenkamp-Gerhard Zbinden Foundation will be awarding two prizes of up to 50,000 Swiss francs. The first prize will be for published scientific research demonstrating a decrease in animal use as a result of the research. The second prize will be awarded for techniques, instruments or procedures that reduce animal pain or distress. Deadline for applications is September 30, 1996. The two prizes are aimed at addressing the concepts of reduction alternatives, refinement alternatives and replacement alternatives advanced by Russell and Burch in their 1959 publication, The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique. To be considered applicants must submit a detailed, triple-spaced (unpublished) manuscript which explains how pain and distress were reduced, the criteria used for assessing pain and distress levels, the reasons for their chosen refinement pursuit and the anticipated impact of achieved results. The study must have involved experimental procedures (not husbandry practices) utilizing rodents or rabbits. Manuscripts will be reviewed by WARDS and a five-person panel of experts. Procter & Gamble International Program for AlternativesProcter & Gamble's International Program for Animal Alternatives is calling for research proposals for projects which will facilitate the development or validation of new methods for testing the efficacy and safety of drugs and consumer products that reduce the use of animals or distress imposed on animals. P & G will provide funding of $50,000 annually for up to three years. Proposals will be accepted from any academic or nonprofit medical research institution throughout the world. The company will provide a list of areas in which proposals are solicited.
